ALAMO BATTALION & ALAMO TRAINING SHIP
SEA CADET/LEAGUE CADET UNITS
The Command of the Alamo Squadron and Alamo Training Ship have set forth a criteria for recruiting prospective cadets. By setting up and presenting the prospective cadets and parents with our standards for recruitment, both the cadet and the unit benefit. The officers and petty officers spend a great deal of time and effort preparing a new cadet for their tour of duty with the unit.
Prospective cadets and parents should be fully aware of the commitment they are making to this program before they join.
Cadets have multiple responsibilities: drill attendance (must attend no less than 75% annually), participation in unit activities, all uniform and grooming requirements are standard United States Navy, strict compliance to all of the Sea Cadet rules and regulations and a commitment to advancing in rank which includes completing and passing all USNSCC coursework. School academics and personal conduct are also considered.
Parents accept the responsibility to fully support the standards and activities of the unit. This includes understanding the financial commitment, travel commitments, time commitment and assisting when required to assure cadets are in compliance with unit standards.
The following is an overview of the recruiting process that you can expect:
-
You will receive a request to attend an Orientation. Prospective cadets and at least one (1) parent or guardian must attend a formal Orientation. The Orientation will include an overview of the program, the unit, the command and a Q & A.
-
The prospective cadet must attend at least three (3) consecutive drills, normally held the second weekend of the month. All drills unless directed are held at the Naval Reserve Center, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.
-
The second drill weekend, prospective cadets and their parents will be polled as to their intent. If all is well, you will be given an application packet to be completed. This will include a list of documents (birth certificates, shot records, report card, social security cards or numbers) fees and a physical exam must also be performed within this time frame by a family physician. This packet must be 100% completed prior to submission. There are no exceptions to this requirement.
-
On the third drill weekend, the prospective cadet and parents will have an interview with the Commanding or Executive officer. A discussion of the prospective cadet's intentions and expectations will be reviewed. Parents should be prepared to have all final questions on the table with answers from the Command. At the conclusion of this meeting, a recruiting invitation will either be extended (note: recruiting package must be 100% completed and ready for submission) or withheld.
-
The new cadet will be sworn in (note: this could be during the third drill or at the next drill weekend), uniforms will be issued (note: uniforms are not tailored. It is the responsibility of the cadet to assure uniforms are tailored to regulation with all required name tags and badges), first coursework, the BMR (Basic Military Requirements) will be issued and must be completed in the first 90 days from induction.
